Key West To Anchorage
The tour would start in Key West the most southern part of North America and proceed up the East coast of the US. Visit the most historic parts of the US such as Williamsburg VA, Washington DC, Boston MA, and Philadelia PA. The tour would then enter Canada in Quebec and ride the Qubec cycleway "Route Vert". Here we would see the Canadian capital Ottawa. Riding west though the beautiful Canadain borial forests of Ontario. Further west we would take the route of the North West Mounted Police though Manitoba, and Saskatchewan to Edmonton. Edmonton is the start of the Alaska highway, which would take us to Alaska.

I like the route. How long do you estimate the route will be? If you start in Key West that means starting in May?

I've got two riders interested in this ride but the earliest they could make it is 2011.

Actually 2011 works better for me as well. I just needed to put a date in when I was filling the form in. As to how far it is I haven't worked it out but my guess is that it is close ot 6000 miles (10,000 kms). I think that you would want to start in early May or maybe even late April.

The north shore of Superior is one of the most fantastic landscapes on the planet, its not too far out of your way.

I agree with Randy. The north shore of Superior is not to be missed. Heading west is problematic though as you will be heading into the prevailing winds.

I am from Calgary and have never cycled the North shore of Lake Superior. So I will take your word for it. I have driven through Wisconsin and Minnesota which is why I picked it. I will do a detailed route when I get home (currently I am on a 3 week Canadain Rockies cycle trip). The prevailing westerlies are a bit of myth. I have lived all my life on the prairies and it blows from the north more than from the west. If you cycle from Anchorage to Key West you get away from the wind problem. However you couldn't start until July as the rainy season in the north doesn't end until July. But now you are into hurricane season in Florida.

This looks like great ride! I think though, I would rather ride it in reverse order, finishing in Key West. Also I’m from BC and think if the rout missed the Okanogan Valley (home town Kelown) the most beautiful parts of BC would be missed.

Wow, after watching the movie about Tour D'Afrique tonight at the Bicycle Film Festival tonight, I was fantasizing about my ideal US/Canada tour to celebrate the 10th anniversary of my lone trip to Europe, which included a fair bit of bike touring. This is almost exactly the route I imagined (in reverse), but I think even better.
I would absolutely love to do this. I was thinking of 2012, but could always consider my celebration a year early...

Rod A. you said that you had two riders interested in this tour. However I see that you haven't hit the count me in button. If you check that button along with your two friends we will be a lot closer to making this tour a reality. Thanks a bunch.

I would agree with others that central BC is not to be missed. When you get into northern Alberta & BC, you're going see mostly road & trees and more road & trees. But then, it's a change from many miles of flat prairies.
