My dream is to bike from Virginia Beach, VA. to L.A. CA. We would ride along the tranamerican trail for most of it, getting off in Colorado to head down to the Grand Canyon for a couple of days of hiking and exploration. Then it would be off to L.A. where I would hope to rest for a few days and then begin a PCT thru-hike.
The main goal of this trip is to keep costs down. We can do this two ways: by camping at trailheads and in public parks, and by shortening the number of days it ussually takes to make a cross-country trip. If we keep moving at a good pace (60-120 miles) we should be able to do the trip in about two months.
This trip is for people who feel like they don't have the time or the money to do such a trip. If we push each other, we'll be able to do it.

Jeremy:
I hate to poopoo anybodies dream tour. However I have done this ride and I have to tell you you will never do it in the time frame you are thinking. It will take at least 75-90 days doing it basicly self-supported, ie dragging your own gear without vehicle support. Comercial tours do it in 60-75 days with vehicle support. In addition it will cost at least $5000. Comercial tours do it for $7000-$15,000. So if you want to do this tour with no support why not just get a map and go?

Hey,
Thank you for your thoughts. I would plan on biking with less gear so that I would not have to drag anything behind me. I just did a week long tour in New York state and managed to have only 15 lbs. of gear on my bike. That makes it easier to ride longer days and therefore get the miles that way without having to necessarily go fast, just for a long time.
With that in mind, doing the ride in less time would mean less money. We would be camping and cooking our own food, that also saves money. I read about a guy who biked accross the country in three weeks, so I think 2 months is very reasonable. What are your thoughts on these things?
