About the Race

Be one of the first cyclists ever to say they have raced from Rio de Janeiro to Quito on what is now the longest stage race on the planet.

In this amateur race, there are no corporate sponsors, legions of fans lining the road, or drug testing. But that doesn't mean there isn't a good dose of competitive spirit. Whether you race for a section from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean, or for the whole tour, across the world’s largest salt desert, up the Andes onto the altiplano, and over passes as high as 4500 meters, this will be an experience that both thrills and chills.

The Vuelta Sudamericana is a  4 ½ month long race broken up into 100+ stages and 9 sections, 20+ rest days, and one travel day. At over 12,000 km (7500 miles), this is the world’s longest cycling race in both distance and time. The stages average 110 km (69 miles) each, ranging from 60 km (37.5 miles) on really rough terrain to more than 185 km (115 miles) on pavement. Certain stages include non-race portions when the Tour rides with a police escort or in convoy through cities. The overall winners will be the cyclists with the lowest accumulated times.

While the goal is to race as much of the distance as possible, the format of the Vuelta is flexible. Based on the number of competitors, how hard the riders wish to compete, and the attractions of the day, some stages may be designated as non-racing, while others may feature a time trial or a half day race. Our hope is that this race will develop similarly and become as popular as the Tour d’Afrique, and we encourage you to take up this unique and amazing challenge.

It should be noted that the daily route, distance, start times, and other stage details are not definite and can be changed on short notice by the Race Director or Tour Director. As the race is not on a closed circuit all riders need to stay aware of traffic, pedestrians, and other obstacles while navigating the day’s route, and must obey the local traffic regulations at all times. The complete race rules are provided to registered riders.
